The Story Behind Notice

After two years of continuous travel between the great urban centers of New York City, Tokyo, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, and other cities, the world ground to a halt.

By virtue of this most random timing, I found myself stuck in a place I had never been before. A small but beautiful suburban neighborhood of Vancouver was to be my home for the first 5 months of the pandemic.

Everything that was my “normal” suddenly changed to its opposite. Instead of traveling the globe, I was contained in one neighborhood. Instead of meeting and photographing random people all day long, I’d walk for hours without seeing more than a handful of humans. Instead of my busy client work schedule, my inbox was quiet and days blended together.

So, I started walking.

Every day, a few hours, camera in hand. It became my meditative practice and helped me ground myself in a world where everything suddenly seemed uncertain.

I walked around my small neighborhood for 123 consecutive days. I practiced slowing down and paying attention so I could see better. Suddenly my world, which had initially felt so small, was revealed to be a massive universe with tiny stories everywhere.

Some Notice Stats

  • 123 days
  • 307 hours of walking (1.6 million steps)
  • 1230km (800 miles)
  • 34,194 images made

Preorder Campaign & Goals

This preorder runs from April 6th through April 27th, 2021.

Once we reach 100 books sold we'll start the presses. If we sell 250 books by April 27th, I will host an exclusive 1-hour "Making a Photo Book" Q&A alongside the book's designer, Dan Rubin, just for preorder supporters. If 500 books are sold by April 27th, each preorder shipment will include a set of four postcards featuring my favorite images.

Every preordered book will be signed and include a limited edition copy of our Behind the Scenes journal, documenting the process of making Notice from start to finish.

Each special edition book will be numbered and signed.

During the preorder window, the standard edition of Notice is priced at €59/$69 (+ shipping), which is €10 off the normal price of €69/$79 (+ shipping).

Limited Edition Print

One of my favorite images from the book will be offered as a limited print (an edition of 30, signed and numbered) on museum-quality archival paper. Each unframed print measures 170mm x 240mm, the exact size of the book, and includes a white border to aid in framing.

The print is only available in combination with the book and would otherwise retail for €249/$299.

Mentor Sessions with Wesley

During a 2-hour session, we will focus on a project or challenge of your choice, take a considered look at your work, and come away with substantive feedback and actionable steps to move your photography forward.

Mentor sessions will be held over Zoom unless you are in or near Amsterdam, in which case we can meet outside in a safe, socially-distant place.

Exclusive 1-of-1 Original Instant Film (Polaroid) Print

During my last week in Vancouver, I revisited some of my favorite daily photo walk locations with a Polaroid 600 SE camera and two packs of Fuji FP-100C instant film. These images are the originals — not a typical print, but the actual tangible image recorded at that exact time and place. I have never sold any of my instant film images before. Supporters of this exclusive preorder tier will own the only copy that will ever exist of these photos.

The Standard and Special Edition

Notice will be published in two editions. The standard edition is bound in a high-quality yellow cloth, matched to the color of the beautiful daisies that I saw on my daily walks. This color represents the excitement of new life and hope.

The special edition is limited to only 50 copies, signed and numbered, and bound in red cloth, matched to the poppies I found growing in unexpected places where daisies couldn't. The red represents perseverance and the passion required to make it through.

The Notice Team

Notice was created by Wesley Verhoeve and a fully remote team of collaborators spread between Vancouver, Amsterdam, Miami, San Francisco, Kamakura, and Melbourne.

The book is designed by Dan Rubin, co-designer of the award-winning photo book, Koya Bound. It features an essay by Craig Mod, an illustrated map by Jeffrey Phillips, and a logo mark designed by Jessica Hische. Lithography by Sebastiaan Hanekroot.

Risks and Challenges

You will be billed immediately upon checkout. In the unlikely event that we don't hit 100 preorders before April 27th, we'll refund everyone their full payments. The book is complete, test-printed, and ready to go to press.

All tiers for Notice will ship late May or early June. Unforeseeable complications may arise due to Covid-19. This book is being printed, bound, and shipped from The Netherlands.
